Everyone has an origin story. What’s yours?

My Medieval history origin story began when I discovered The Hobbit as a kid. It wasn’t the book though it was the 1977 Rankin/Bass movie The Hobbit. Followed a few years later by The Return of the King.

Then I found the books and couldn’t put them down. I was enthralled with the entire saga

Although Dungeons & Dragons was banned in my house it helped fuel my interest in the Middle Ages. The heroic characters, the fantasy settings and the medieval weaponry all piqued my imagination.

A few years later I discovered The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks and my love for the Middle Ages continued to grow. I was drawn in by the fantastic artwork of the Brothers Hildebrandt and the story solidified my interest.

The fantasy genre was my gateway into medieval history and sAnd I want to parked my interest enough to go on and study medieval history. Only to discover the history was as exciting and sometimes more so, than the fantasy books.

Watching The Hobbit cartoon as a kid sparked a life long love of medieval history. You never know what will inspire the future generations.

Your turn! What was your Medieval gateway?

I’m always fascinated how people get their start with a career, hobby or passion. And I want to hear how your journey started down the Medieval history path.

Did you watch or read The Lord of the Rings? Maybe your grandparent or parent was a professor.

Or did you watch Game of Thrones and decide to learn the real history of the Red Wedding? Or are you new on the journey and just discovering medieval history.

However you came into liking and studying Medieval history I want to know. And I want to share it to inspire others.

That’s why I’m putting together a podcast episode featuring your Medieval origin story.
